How To Get Free Notre Dame Cathedral Tickets in Paris

notre dame cathedral tickets - feature photo

We all saw the news in April 2019 — one of the world’s most famous churches, Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, caught on fire. And if you somehow missed that, then your Instagram feed was certainly full of every person you knew who’d ever been to Paris posting grainy photos from the early 2000s of themselves at Notre Dame, captioned simply with a #brokenheartemoji. 💔

But six years later, Notre Dame lives again! In fact, it just re-opened to the public in December 2024. So when Matt and I visited Paris at the end of March, we couldn’t miss our chance to check it out. And when I was planning our visit, I was shocked to find out that tickets to visit Notre Dame are free! However, only a limited number of reservations are available per day — and they don’t make it easy to claim those tickets. So here’s exactly how you can get free Notre Dame cathedral tickets. Truth or Stereotype: Are Parisians Actually That Mean?

are parisians mean - feature photo

I first visited Paris in the summer of 2011, right after graduating from high school, on my first-ever trip to Europe. After spending a few weeks in Germany with my boyfriend at the time, we boarded a tour bus in Stuttgart for the 10-hour ride to Paris. I remember visiting Notre Dame, being amazed by the Eiffel Tower, drinking wine on a Seine River cruise (so scandalous for an 18-year-old), and generally having a good time.

Since that was my first big trip outside the U.S., I was so curious about visiting Paris again with a different perspective — the perspective of someone who’s now visited 31 countries and countless major cities around the world. I was excited to go with Matt, too! But when we told people about our plans to visit Paris, we heard a few variations of this sentiment: “The people in Paris are so mean.” [Read more…]

Road Trip Itinerary: Spain, France, and Andorra in 2 Weeks

road trip itinerary - spain france andorra feature

Back in January 2023, Matt and I took our first big European road trip — from Barcelona to Andorra, to France and back to Spain. Literally 14 blog posts later, this is the last thing I had to say about it: What if you wanted to take a similar trip of your own? A road trip on another continent can be daunting, but having an itinerary can help take some of the pressure off of planning.

So, to help, here’s our exact road trip itinerary to help you plan your own! [Read more…]

City Review: Bordeaux, France

place de la bourse - bordeaux france

Place de la Bourse in Bordeaux

After spending a few days in Toulouse, we were back on the road for our next stop on our European road trip: Bordeaux, France. While researching and planning our trip, I had Googled: “Toulouse or Bordeaux?” The internet didn’t provide a consensus (it would be weird if it did), and since the two cities are less than three hours apart, we decided to visit both.

So here’s what it was like to visit Bordeaux, France. [Read more…]

Top 7 Things To Do in Toulouse, France

things to do in toulouse - feature photo

Toulouse may not get as much attention as other cities in France, like Paris or Marseille. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a visit! We spent a few days in Toulouse during our European road trip in January, and we found that there were lots of things to do — and eat — in Toulouse. Plus, the city itself is gorgeous. Did you know its nickname is “La Ville Rose,” or the pink city?

From art and architecture, to greenspace, to feats of engineering, here are 7 things to do in Toulouse. [Read more…]

City Review: Toulouse, France

Andorra la Vella: check. Carcassonne: check. Next on the agenda was Toulouse, France. Matt had never been to France before, and I’d only been to Paris and Lyon, so Toulouse was totally new for both of us.

As with many of the places we went on our European road trip, we didn’t know what to expect because we don’t typically research places too much before we arrive. But we loved Toulouse, and Matt even said it was his favorite city we visited on the whole trip! So… keep reading to learn what it’s like to visit Toulouse, France. [Read more…]

Is It Worth It To Visit Carcassonne, France?

carcassonne - feature photo

After leaving Andorra on our European road trip last month, our next stop was a quick little day trip to visit Carcassonne, France. Only a 3-hour drive from Andorra la Vella and one hour from where we’d be staying that night in Toulouse, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to visit. All the time we spent playing the board game Carcassonne with our roommates over the years meant that we had to at least check it out. [Read more…]

Trip Review: Barcelona + European Road Trip

european road trip: feature photo

Bonjour, friends! As I begin to write this post, I’m sitting in a coffee shop in Bordeaux, France. I’m almost halfway through our two-week European road trip across Andorra, southern France, and northern Spain. It’s been raining all day. Matt is back at the Airbnb taking a nap. And I almost didn’t sit down to write this because my computer was almost dead and all the outlets in this coffee shop had plastic covers on them. Devastatingly, I don’t speak French so I was too afraid to ask the one person who works here for help. Eventually I settled for a weak “bonjour” and holding up my laptop charger… and here we are.

I have SO MUCH to tell you all about this trip! About the cities we’ve been to, about the car rental process, about taking a road trip in Europe. But I wanted to start with a “trip review” type post, as I’ve done in the past. I’ll probably publish this before it’s all the way done and then just update it as we go through the rest of the trip. I think it will provide a lot of good context for the trip, and I’ll eventually update it with links to specific topics as well. [Read more…]

Vieux Lyon and River Saône

Back in December 2019, my friend Hanna and I visited Lyon, France, for its famous Festival of Lights. (I’m excited to say that I’m planning to attend again later this year!)

Besides that, Lyon is a beautiful city with plenty else going on — even if you aren’t there for the festival! So check out the best things you should do during your visit. [Read more…]

All About The Festival of Lights in Lyon, France

festival of lights in lyon - feature

Une toute petite histoire de lumière at Place des Terreaux

Each year in December, a special festival takes place in the French city of Lyon — the Fête des Lumières. Or Festival of Lights, if you’re like me and your French isn’t up to speed. (Unfortunately, a week of half-hearted Duolingo wasn’t as helpful as I’d hoped.)

Fortunately, one of the puentes — 4-day weekends — in Spain coincided with the festival during my second year in Madrid, 2019. Which also happened to be the same time that my best friend Hanna was visiting me! And since it’d been 8ish years since my last trip to France, and because the two of us make really good travel companions, we decided to attend the festival. [Read more…]
